Accessibility Grade
2 stars
Reason for Grade
Good: LBJSC parking garage has an elevator. I believe there are accessible parking spots on the first level, but I don’t have a decal so I’m not 100% sure on that. LBJSC itself has an elevator. It also has at least one set of sliding doors at each of its main entrances.
[Let me just say, before I get into the bad, that I LOVE TxState. I finished my undergrad there in 2004 and am currently working on a Masters that I hope to finish in 2014. I love the school itself, it’s the ACCESSIBILITY I have issues with.]
Bad: I found a parking spot on the level 2A of the parking garage. I walked to the elevator, and the elevator was not working (I would later discover it was merely the elevator BUTTON that was broken, but either way I was not able to use the elevator on my way down). It would be helpful if the sliding doors were on the same side as the path to the elevator instead of the path to the stairs, but that’s just to avoid having to navigate across crowds in an effort to get to the elevator. I was disappointed to find that the elevator nearest the parking garage entrance only went to the 4th floor. I had to walk to a different set of elevators to get to the 5th floor where I needed to be. (Incidentally, the Office of Disability Services is ALSO located on the 5th floor, which I hardly think is considered accessible given what I’ve just described.) On my way to these other elevators, I had to open a heavier door that was supposed to be activated by an accessible button (this is on the 3rd floor). However, this button did not appear to be working (as I came back through, the button on the other side of the door worked). To top it all off, TxState’s official Twitter account has confirmed to me (at my personal Twitter) that only out-of-town commuter buses stop at LBJSC. So if I didn’t want to park at the parking garage and pay $3-6, I would have to take my regular bus to campus, climb up the MONSTROUS stairs to the library, then climb MORE stairs/use the ramp to get to LBJSC. Why not just have the Campus Loop bus stop at LBJSC? TxState, I love you, but I’m BEGGING you to fix these issues!!
